The practice of teaching and educating adults is called “Adult education”. Most recently, this type of education happens in the place, where the people are working. The most spread methods are ‘extension’ courses, which take place in universities, secondary schools, or colleges. This is also called “continuing education”.
These courses may also take place in community colleges, folk high schools, as also in centers of lifelong learning. Other famous names of this practice are “Training and Development”, “Andragogy” (distinguished from “Pedagogy”).
There is a difference between the non-formal adult education and the vocational education. The first includes learning for personal development, and learning new skills. The second one is most frequently related to adding extra skills, and is held at the people’s work places.
The adult education is much different from the education of the children. The children are presently accumulating knowledge, and skills, while the adults have already accumulated the basically, main knowledge, and spend time for courses to develop their knowledge, as also to add some extra learning to their skills.
The knowledge of the adults is frequently applied in a practical fashion, with the purpose of more effectively learning, during the education process. The goals of the adults will be better furthered, when they apply their most recently gained knowledge.
In the 1990s, one of the most spread courses for gaining qualifications, were the computer training courses. Then, the most of the adults, who were office workers, enrolled it. These courses gave very good and appreciated qualifications, and included the operating system’s basic use, as also some software specific applications. Many of the people, who took these courses had either their own whim for this, or their managers recommended this.
In the USA were added special systems for the high-school dropouts. They had the opportunity to ‘get back in school’, and recover the missed general education requirements.
